Ottawa, July 2025 — On June 3rd, 2025, Quantropi Inc. and Alea Quantum Technologies achieved a significant milestone in digital defence by successfully establishing the first transatlantic quantum-secure communication link between two NATO DIANA accelerator sites: The BioInnovation Institute in Copenhagen and COVE in Halifax.
James Nguyen, Co-founder and CEO of Quantropi, stated, “At Quantropi, we’re proud to collaborate with [Alea Quantum] and NATO DIANA to establish this quantum-safe communication link. It’s not just about sending a message—it’s about securing the future of global defence and cybersecurity.”
From Vision to Reality: Six Months of Quantum Collaboration
Over the past six months, Quantropi and Alea Quantum have collaborated under NATO DIANA’s accelerator framework, benefiting from NATO’s mentorship, funding, and testing infrastructure. Alea provided high-performance quantum random number generators (QRNGs), which generate truly random numbers through quantum processes. Meanwhile, Quantropi contributed with its QiSpace™ Secure Network Add-On—a post-quantum cryptographic layer designed to operate over existing network infrastructure.
The outcome was a real-time quantum-safe network established between NATO DIANA accelerator sites without requiring specialized quantum hardware at the endpoints. “We’ve proven that quantum security isn’t just theoretical—it’s operational now,” Nguyen emphasized. “We’re not waiting for Q-Day or Y2Q— the moment when quantum computers may break current encryption methods. Sensitive data and communications are already at risk from ‘Harvest Now, Decrypt Later’ threats, and we are acting now.”
The Technical Backbone: QiSpace™ Secure Network Add-On
The QiSpace™ Quantum Secure Network Add-On features both NIST PQC and Quantropi’s Novel algorithms, optimized for high performance in resource-constrained environments. This solution offers flexibility and crypto-agility for establishing quantum-secure network connections. Its components include:
1. OpenSSL Cryptographic Provider Module: Supplies the cryptographic functions necessary for quantum-secure network connections.
2. Mbed TLS Quantum Safe Extension: Provides key exchange and digital signature algorithms required for establishing quantum-secure connections.
With QiSpace™’s Secure Network Add-On, defence organizations can retrofit existing IPSec VPNs to deliver quantum-safe encryption, effectively protecting high-value data from Quantum-AI-enabled threats. Paired with Alea Quantum QRNGs, which deliver robust, non-deterministic randomness, this comprehensive solution demonstrates full-scale readiness for quantum secure communications across continents.
Why It Matters
In the realm of national security, timing is crucial. Quantum computing technology is advancing rapidly, with experts warning that encryption-breaking capabilities may emerge within a few years. Consequently, it is imperative to secure sensitive data without delay.
The successful demonstration by Quantropi and Alea Quantum showed that high-quality quantum entropy can be seamlessly integrated into existing cybersecurity systems, proving effective across various distances and environments. “With Alea, we’ve created a scalable, sovereign solution that is operational now—no quantum hardware is necessary at the endpoints,” Nguyen concluded.
Quantropi’s expansion into Dual-Use Innovation
As a 2025 DIANA Innovator, Quantropi is actively expanding its portfolio of quantum-secure communication solutions, including:
- Secure Tactical Radio
- Secure Streaming Video
- Quantum-Safe Network Add-Ons
“The threats of tomorrow are already here,” Nguyen reiterated. “We’re leading the charge to safeguard communications, that matters most—TODAY!”
